Handmade ceramic piece by Maya Micenmacher in France

Maya Micenmacher works with grogged stoneware from her studio in Ivoy-le-Pré, a stone's throw from La Borne. Trained in wheel-throwing at the CNIFOP, then alongside Hervé Rousseau, Éric Astoul and other ceramists rooted in the local tradition, she fires with wood in a noborigama at 1300°C, a kiln she built with her partner Nicolas Rousseau.

Her decoration varies from one series to the next: commas, spots, splashes, geometric bands, always in black on an ivory ground, sometimes lifted by a touch of green or red. She draws them with a brush, an oxide pencil, a sponge or a finger, depending on the day's inspiration, on pieces that have been biscuit-fired and glazed just before loading. The feldspar-and-ash glaze leaves some areas bare, which the fire colours in its own way. That is exactly what she is after: the surprise at each unloading, the depth that only wood firing gives.
