Asemi Co is a Japanese brand that was created by Yuki & Lars, designers and longtime friends. Always fascinated by traditional craftsmanship, they came together in 2015 to launch Asemi Co. Their mission is to preserve traditional local Japanese craftsmanship by combining various handicrafts with contemporary design. The resulting products thus offer a fusion of contemporary design and know-how.
They selected many craftsmen from all over Japan to give the Asemi cup a local identity in each Japanese region.
Asemi Co. mugs come in two sizes. They may look different at first glance, but they all have the same basic design, which allows them to be combined and stacked no matter what style of pottery they were made with.
The Kasama-yaki cup is a pottery made in Kasama, Ibaraki prefecture. Kasama-yaki originated around the 18th century and quickly developed into one of the largest pottery producing areas in the Kanto region. Today, approximately 300 kilns are active, producing a variety of styles and materials. As a style of pottery without a particular regional clay, it is a region that imports raw materials from other regions, giving it unlimited possibilities.
Asemi Kasama-yaki cups are made by artisan Masami Taniguchi. The premium porcelain cups are imported from Hasami and have a few coats of a special glaze applied to them. As a specialty, he bakes the cups in an oven that was once used for baking tiles. Unlike most other cooking methods, this oven smokes the cups, resulting in an incredible blue, rough finish.
