Born and raised in Hokkaido, the northernmost region of Japan. Yu Uchida is a highly skilled furniture maker trained in Japanese cabinetmaking. He makes furniture, but also wooden plates and trays.
After furthering his knowledge and skills in woodworking at the Forest Takumi School, he now has a workshop in Mikasa City, Hokkaido, where he works diligently on creating his works.
His Japanese maple works have a unique texture and are silky to the touch.
Stained with iron acetate or khaki dye, maple wood's veins stand out. Its staining technique brings out the patterns in the wood. Each piece is individually manufactured by turning. It is stained and polished several times to highlight the expression of the wood. The varnish applied to the wood allows the use of fatty foods and sauces.
