Dai Shikai was born in Kitakyushu City, in the prefecture of Fukuoka. He was a young engineer for a Japanese car manufacturer before converting into a ceramist. He learned alongside Master Minoru SUZUKI. He works in Mashiko (Tochigi) in a small house surrounded by fields and rice paddies. His ceramics are cooked over a wood fire in the climbing kiln. The cooking time is 2-4 days. The finishes are varied, it is the fruit of the natural reaction of chance and its experimentations of the different techniques.
