Dai Shikai was born in Kitakyushu City, in the prefecture of Fukuoka. He was a young engineer for a Japanese car manufacturer before converting into a ceramist. He learned alongside Master Minoru SUZUKI. He works in Mashiko (Tochigi) in a small house surrounded by fields and rice paddies. His ceramics are cooked over a wood fire in the climbing kiln. The cooking time is 2-4 days. The finishes are varied, it is the fruit of the natural reaction of chance and its experimentations of the different techniques. He usually works on tableware such as plates and bowls with collected earth.
